Lakanto® Classic is a proprietary blend of two special ingredients, Erythritol and Monk Fruit (Luo Han Guo). Erythritol is a sugar alcohol produced through the fermentation of non-GMO certified corn. It exists in many foods such as grapes, mushrooms, cheese, wine and beer.

The Lakanto Story
Lakanto® is made by Saraya Co., Ltd, a Japan-based international health and environmental company. In 1995, Saraya Co. formulators struck gold, almost literally! They developed a golden-brown natural sweetener by adding a high purity extract of the Chinese fruit Monk Fruit (Luo Han Guo) to erythritol, a sugar alcohol made of fermented glucose.
The resulting sweetener had absolutely zero calories and a glycemic index of zero. It closely matched the sweetness profile of table sugar and could be used in cooking, baking, coffee and tea. Best of all, it contained no additives and tasted great!
They called this sweetener Lakanto®, Japanese for “sweet fruit.” Over the next decade, it became the #1 selling natural sugar substitute in Japan. Fourteen years later, it is still going strong and remains the only sweetener that combines Monk Fruit (Luo Han Guo) extract and erythritol.
It all began in the 1950s, when company founder Mr. Shota Saraya began producing soaps and dispensers to help improve sanitation in postwar Japan. The company grew, and today Saraya Co., Ltd. now provides cleaning and sanitation solutions to thousands of households, businesses, kitchens and hospitals.
Saraya has a truly green history and started providing biodegradable and non-toxic products long before “eco-friendly” and “green” became buzzwords.

Perhaps Mr. Saraya’s R&D team would have thought so too, when in the early 1990s their boss suddenly asked them to develop a natural sweetener! A diabetic, Mr. Saraya was frustrated that there wasn’t a zero calorie sweetener on the market that was easy to use and didn’t contain artificial ingredients.
First, the Saraya team developed a sweetener based on licorice root. It was low calorie and low glycemic index, but it was not acceptable because it was not as useful as sugar and had a strong taste. “Back to the drawing board,” said Mr. Saraya. This lead to the breakthrough in 1995, which produced the natural sweetener, Lakanto®.
